Overweight Kids Are Imitating What They See In Adults

THIS IS REALLY A DISBURBING THOUGHT--KIDS SEEM TO THINK ITS NORMAL AND OKAY TO BE OVERWEIGHT! THERE IS LESS AND LESS PEER PRESSURE TO STAY FIT AND LOOK YOUR BEST!

That's right adults! When it comes to fat loss and weight loss, kids are doing what they see in adults. "Do as I say and not as I do" doesn't work!

Let's face it---there has been a weight problem in this country for a while. There are many reasons for this like sedentary lifestyles (less walking, sit down jubs, sitting at the computer for hours at home, less outdoor activities), over-eating and less regular exercise.

I was sitting in a meeting some months ago and the speaker said something that caught everyone's attention. He basically said that for the first time since medical statistics have been kept on life expectancy in the United States, life expectancy will go down starting with this generation.

That generation is your kid's generation. The reason? Obesity.
Obesity and the diseases it causes is now the number one preventable condition that causes death in this country.

I don't see very many kids playing "street ball", playing yard games, on playgrounds, at swimming pools, etc. That's what I want to see more of from kids. I don't see enough adults doing these things either.

That kind of physical activity is not forced but is usually the result of their imagination. It makes burning calories fun for kids! It has been proven that we are more likely to continue activities that are enjoyable.

Let's all do our part to change this trend! The obesity problem in this country didn't happen overnight and things won't change overnight. Get started making changes today!

  1. Amen Mark - It is a sad commentary on our society when obesity is seen as the norm.

You're right of course. I seldom see children playing outside like my generation did. I take a concerted effort to involve my children in outside activities. The fact is that children emulate their parents - at least until peer pressure kicks in. My advice to all parents - is to become involved in your child's life and health - before it is too late! Diabetes is becoming more and more prevalent among children.

Watch the tv show "Honey we're killing the kids" sometime for a wake-up call.

    Great Article.
